Uppala: The Thayankett Mahotsav, a traditional religious festival, was celebrated with great devotion from April 8 to April 12 at Uppala Thurthi, Mahamalaraya Temple in Kasaragod district.
The festival was organized by members of the Turthi Padengudiya (Kotian) family, with the help of the other devotees which is one of the prominent taravadu (ancestral family) lineages associated with the Uppala Sri Bhagavathi Temple. The rituals were held at the historic Turthi Taravadu, drawing participation from family members and devotees from nearby regions.

A key highlight of the festival was the performance of Theyyam, one of the oldest and most unique ritual art forms of South India, widely practiced in the Malabar region of Kerala. In Theyyam, performers embody divine forms through elaborate costumes, makeup, and ritualistic dance.
As part of the Thayankett ritual, deities of the taravadu were worshipped in Theyyam form, accompanied by traditional music, special poojas, and vibrant cultural expressions. The event showcased rich artistic traditions and deep-rooted spiritual beliefs.

The celebration reflected the strong cultural heritage and devotion of the local community, with the festival being observed in a grand and traditional manner.
